NG-Medals.com

Posted by knugen Nov. 8, 2009 @ 2:31 AM EST

tl;dr version
NG-Medals.com, how improve?

---

Alright, here is another news post about about my site NG-Medals.com :P

First off: NG switched things around in the HTML source code for medals recently (which I run through a script instead of manually adding everything), so until I had some time to modify my tools for these changes I was a bit behind on adding medal games. It is however fixed now, and better than ever.. Although no one but me will ever know I suppose ;)

Anyhow, moving on, this is some exciting stuff so hang in there :)

I know it seems like nothing is happening with the site, and that is due to the simple fact that there really isn't (except for keeping the database up to date). I have however been working a little on and off on a small redesign, and I'm aiming for a layout much like the one you can see here. Now, I'm mainly doing this site because I think it's fun, but also at least as much for the community (that means you!), so what are your thoughts on this? Is there some feature that you are dieing for the new version of the site to have?

I can't promise that you will see a finished redesign anytime soon, updating my script tools gave me some motivation so hopefully it wont take very long, but no matter when this happens I will make sure to go back to this post for feedback so it's in no way a waste of time to comment!

Some things I already have in mind (I will update this with your suggestions!):
- Possibility to hide already acquired medals (I'm having a couple of different ideas on how to solve this, hopefully it will be more or less automatic)
- User contributed tips for each medal in a more sophisticated way than comments (but the comment feature will remain)
-Completely automatized game updates (probably hourly), which makes it possible to send out emails to subscribers when a new game is added
- NG graphics (confirmed)
- Rating system for the medals' difficulty

Cool mate, looks great!

Nov. 8, 2009 | 5:33 AM Nayhan says:

What's the point of this website?

Nov. 8, 2009 | 7:01 AM knugen responds:

Well, my goal is to make it the only source of information (lists, guides, etc) about NG medals you will ever need. That will of course be impossible, or at least very hard, but it's the aim I guess.

Nov. 8, 2009 | 7:24 AM JOHNNY29 says:

Nice (website) banner, did you make it your self?

Nov. 8, 2009 | 8:54 AM knugen responds:

Hm? ^^ I didn't make the font, but part from that yeah :P

Nov. 8, 2009 | 7:30 AM Jimp says:

Great idea man, the site seems to work great! Right now I'd say all it really needs is an improved layout, which youre already working on!

Maybe have some lists like "easiest medals" for stat whores and "hardest medals" for the hardcore, I think offering something like that might help bring a few more people to the site.

Nov. 8, 2009 | 8:56 AM knugen responds:

Ah nice, I remember someone suggesting a rating system of some sort.. Perhaps some kind of "how hard is this medal?" poll on each medal could be something, and then make lists as you proposed :D

Nov. 8, 2009 | 9:35 AM daedraslayer229 says:

Um, yeah, you should probably look at this.

Nov. 8, 2009 | 9:52 AM knugen responds:

I know of that :)

And yes, right now that is a better resource than my site in most ways, but there isn't much more that wylina can do with the limited tools given by NG. I have full control over my site, and the possibilities are basically endless.

id be interested in adapting some of the css onto that site.

Nov. 8, 2009 | 10:28 AM knugen responds:

Coolio, that would make life a bit easier for me :)

Nov. 8, 2009 | 2:23 PM Mich says:

Looking good I must say. I'm wondering one thing though... Once the medals system goes public, how will you be able to keep track of all submissions with medals?
Are you going to build in a system where users can submit games they found themselves?

Eitherway, best of luck with the site!

Nov. 9, 2009 | 2:32 PM knugen responds:

I will have to wait and see how the public system changes things before I can give a definite answer, but I'm quite positive with how my experimenting with a completely automated system is coming along :)

Nov. 8, 2009 | 2:51 PM coolit12 says:

Brilliant
now I have a medal wiki
also the difficulty rating system sounds awesome
just be careful with users messing around with it if it does go in

Nov. 9, 2009 | 2:35 PM knugen responds:

Yeah, I don't think people will find very much joy in sabotaging that system, but some security measures are always needed ofc.

Nov. 13, 2009 | 6:08 PM clesure says:

Awesome site, mate! It's easily helped me get 1,000+ points on random medals here and there. Quick question for you though, is NG not currently displaying the medal 'section' on the games? For some reason, that box seems to have been removed for me on the submissions. I don't have another PC to test it out and I want to make sure my settings aren't jacked up. I can still earn medals fine and they save to my account, but the games themselves don't display the medal box. I hope this makes sense haha, I'm way tired so not too sure. =P

Nov. 13, 2009 | 6:27 PM knugen responds:

Thanks :)

And yes, it does show up for me, perhaps it was just some temporary error.

You wouldn't get this from any other guy

I just wanna tell you how Im feeling
Gotta make you understand

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

We've know each other for so long
Your hearts been aching
But you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know whats been going on
We know the game and were gonna play it

And if you ask me how Im feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry

Nov. 28, 2009 | 5:29 AM Gateau says:

You mention that you update the database manually, as in you manually put in all of the metals/games? Why don't you have the site just pull the info from here: http://www.newgrounds.com/game/gamesw ithmedals/ ? You can use cURL or any other method to do that.

Nov. 28, 2009 | 10:04 AM knugen responds:

I don't do it completely manually, I have scripted a small tool which I can run the HTML source through and it picks out the medal info. I have a completely automated system halfway finished, but as of now I don't really have the time to finish it :(

Nov. 28, 2009 | 4:07 PM Gateau says:

Ohhh, but if you're already doing the parsing, you might aswell fetch the HTML source using: file_get_contents("http://");
---
file_get_contents returns the HTML source of the page, so from there you can just have the site automatically grab the source and then automatically parse it! And from there you can go beyond that and have it search the games-with-metals page every 24 hours for new games so you don't have to go searching yourself.

Nov. 28, 2009 | 6:11 PM knugen responds:

Yup, that's exactly what I'm working on "now" :)

Why do you put ads on it so you can rake a huge profit from all the medal obsessed visitors you get?

Dec. 15, 2009 | 10:17 AM knugen responds:

Don't?

I will eventually sneak in an ad or two, it's not of much use now though as I have < 100 visitors a day ;)
